The complexities of Haiti’s cultural history–and socioeconomic distress–were reflected in a museum survey of highly inventive, indigenous work. In Haitian sculpture, the incorporation of readymade elements into assemblages is propelled by a combination of economic necessity, creative will and religious belief.
