The exhibition Rauschenberg: The White and Black Paintings 1949-1952 held at the Larry Gagosian Gallery in New York provided the opportunity to examine Rauschenberg’s early paintings and to reconsider the context in which these works were first shown–in tandem with Elemental Sculptures at Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery in October 1953.
